Chango Offering Statue
Originating within the Yoruba faith and influencing Santeria, and many other faiths of Latin America and the Caribbean, Chango is the orisha of thunder and lightning. Known as the Sky Father, he is often viewed as chief among the Orisha and among the most powerful of the Orisha under Olodumare.
In history, Chango (also known as Shango or Jakuta) was the third king of Oyo. With many stories surrounding his birth and acquisition of magic, it is universally agreed that his life was full of dramatic events through which he eventually obtained the secret of magic.
While Chango is typically displayed as a strapping man wielding the Oshe, or double-headed axe, here Chango is shown in a more peaceful repose. Sitting with legs crossed he is shown wearing golden jewelry bedecked with jewels, including a crown denoting his position among the Orisha as well as his place within life. Scattered at his feet and sealed in the base with a clear resin are many offerings of jewels, coin, rice, and seed; the riches of earth and man.
The whole piece measures approximately 10 1/4 inches tall, 6 inches wide, and 7 inches deep and has been sculpted from plaster.
